The Verdict

Wednesday made it three straight gains for the S&P 500 (+0.58% to 7,757.17) and the participation held: 486 advancers against 390 decliners in our 900-name universe, the share above the 200-day average back over half at 50.56%, and 42 names at a 52-week high against just 3 on Tuesday. Then the overnight tape took it back. Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure pushed Brent to $111 to $112 and WTI to about $99.30, Meta's capex math and Tesla's profit squeeze soured the AI read, and by 8:30 AM ET futures were down about 1% (S&P) to 1.8% (Nasdaq) with the VIX back at 18.2 to 18.4 from a 16.68 close. The AI meter eased 2 points to 51, still Orange. The desk reads this as a risk-off open against a three-day repair: the setups are retests and a conditional reclaim, the scanner's first cup and handle joins 13 fresh signals, and nothing gets chased into an oil spike.

Desk Scenarios

The dip gets bought (the repair case). Claims print near the 200k consensus, Brent stalls under $112, and the S&P holds Wednesday's breakout area above 7,705 on a closing basis: three days of repair outweigh one oil morning, and the retest setups fill at their zones instead of gapping through them.

Oil plus AI doubt compounds (the squeeze case). Brent sustains above $112 on fresh supply headlines, META and TSLA premarket losses deepen into the close, and QQQ loses its 50-day area ($725.14, held by $0.06 on Wednesday): the meter pushes back toward the high 50s and most entries never trigger, which is the design working.

Rates reassert. The 10-year closes back above 5.20% (Wednesday's Treasury par print was 5.13%) or the France story reignites into Friday's Moody's review: yields, not earnings, set the day, and defensives keep the month's leadership.

Major News

Three up days, and the third one broadened. The S&P 500 rose 0.58% to 7,757.17, the Dow rose 0.69% to 52,856.09 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.05% to 26,702.86 on Wednesday (Reuters and index closes; the AI Trade Dashboard tape agrees). SpaceX soared 7.8% on its first profitable quarter, Super Micro jumped 9.6% on its raised AI server outlook, and the VIX fell 3.6% to 16.68, its third straight decline (Investopedia and morning roundups, Oct 21-22). Underneath, our universe count narrowed from Tuesday's thrust (486 advancers, 390 decliners) while quality improved: 42 names closed at a 52-week high, against 3 on Tuesday.

Meta: the ads paid, the capex bill grew. Q3 revenue rose 26% to $64.6B and beat estimates; adjusted EPS was $7.40 against a GAAP $3.83 that carried a one-time $9.89B legal settlement charge (company release coverage, Oct 21). The other side of the print: Q3 capex of $34.91B, free cash flow of negative $2.12B against positive $10.6B a year earlier, the 2026 capex range narrowed to $135B to $145B with the floor raised $5B, and a new non-voting Class C share class created, in the company's words, to help fund growth (Meta release via the AI Trade Dashboard, Oct 22). The shares rose in early after-hours trade, then faded: Finnhub printed META at $681.03 in premarket at 8:46 AM ET, down 2.36% from Wednesday's $697.52 close. The guide held; the funding structure is what the market is pricing.

Tesla: a top-line beat with a profit squeeze. Q3 revenue was $28.05B with adjusted EPS of $0.48 against $0.43 expected, while net income fell about 43% to $787M on AI, R&D and Optimus spend, and full-year capex guidance was lowered to about $20B, described on the call as efficient deployment (Tesla Q3 coverage, Oct 21, via the AI Trade Dashboard and morning reports). Paid FSD subscriptions rose 67% to 1.74M and robotaxi expands from Austin toward Dallas, with financial contribution guided to 2027. Premarket snapshots ran from -3.5% (Finnhub, 8:46 AM ET) to -5.3% (Reuters morning coverage): the range is printed because the snapshots genuinely differ by hour.

Oil is the morning's macro. Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure pushed Brent up more than 2% to the $111 to $112 area and WTI to about $99.30 to $99.57 (Reuters, Oct 22; swing desk snapshot). Europe took the hit directly: the Stoxx 600 fell 0.84% to 639.05 by 07:12 GMT with Barclays down 2.5% on a profit miss and Hermes down 6.7% on soft revenue (Reuters, Oct 22), and the DAX was down 1.1% at midday with Infineon and SAP leading the tech decline. Lam Research is the US read of the same mood: a revenue beat with soft guidance, down more than 6% after hours and 8.4% in the swing desk's premarket snapshot.

This morning's beats, priced carefully. Lockheed Martin beat (EPS $7.97 vs $7.52 expected, sales $20.7B, backlog $292B, guidance raised) and Spotify beat on subscribers (306M) and revenue ($5.73B) with an EPS miss, both per the 8:00 AM swing desk, which carries them as today's setups below. CSX also beat and is a retest setup. The pattern of the week holds: beats are being sorted by their guides and their spending, not their headlines.

Seoul gave back a little, the meter eased a little. The KOSPI fell 3.5% on Thursday (final close), reversing Wednesday's 3.29% rebound to 5,735.66, when foreign investors turned net buyers and Samsung and SK hynix each rose more than 5% (morning coverage, Oct 22; Seoul Economic Daily and Yonhap via the AI Trade Dashboard). The AI meter's foreign component improved 70 to 58 on that rebound, one reason the meter eased to 51 even as this morning's tape worsened.

Desk-computed from the scanner's refreshed price cache. The advance narrowed from Tuesday's 711-to-187 thrust, which is normal on day three, but the quality gauges improved: the above-200-day share crossed back over half (49.33% to 50.56%) and 52-week highs jumped from 3 to 42. Repair is becoming participation. The caveat is this morning: breadth computed on a risk-off open will give some of it back, and the desk will print what today actually does in tomorrow's issue. Put/call and full-market new-high/new-low counts had no dated verifiable source this morning and are omitted rather than estimated.

The Record

Desk ledger: CVX and AAPL remain open from Oct 15 (CVX closed Wednesday at $226.78, $2.22 under its $229 T1; AAPL closed at $343.99, back above its entry zone). MPC is a booked stop-out and GILD a closed no-fill. Of Wednesday's four setups: MU filled in its zone and closed at $913.67, open; MMM's second leg filled on the dip to $167.71 and closed at $174.74, open with T1 at $176; NOC and V never filled (details in the Scoreboard). Scanner ledger: the new ledger has its first resolutions: 4 resolved (2 wins, both MEDP pullbacks; 2 losses, GOOG and GOOGL), 39 open including today's 13. The learner folded the 4 outcomes and the momentum pullback factor moved 0.556 to 0.554.

Today's Setups

Three ranked longs plus one conditional, built from this morning's 8:00 AM swing report sheet. Its published levels were not in hand at this desk, so the entry zones, stops and targets below are desk levels set off the Oct 21 close and the names' own support and resistance, labeled as such (the swing sheet's own targets are noted where it printed them); the theses follow the swing report's names and this morning's verified prints. The Oct 15 and Oct 21 setups are carried in the Scoreboard.

KMI Kinder Morgan

Entry $33.60 to $34.00   Stop $33.15   Targets $36.00 / $38.00
Target $36.00
Stop $33.15
Last $33.97
Entry zone

The swing sheet's breakout: KMI closed Wednesday at $33.97, a session high of $34.22 against the $34.23 horizontal top the name has pressed for ten sessions, on 1.5x average volume, with RSI at 64.1. Kinder Morgan also reported after Wednesday's close (it was on this page's after-close slate). Correction, added after publish: the verified Q3 result was a beat (Zacks, Oct 21), EPS $0.35 vs $0.33 expected and revenue $4.53B vs $4.37B expected, so the event risk flagged at publish has cleared; the setup itself is the price structure below, unchanged. The desk buys the retest, not the spike: zone from Wednesday's $33.60 low to the close, stop under the breakout shelf, targets at the swing sheet's $36 and $38. This morning's oil spike is a tailwind for the complex and a volatility warning for the entry. Invalidation: close below $33.15

CSX CSX
#2 EARNINGS GAP RETEST
Entry $47.85 to $48.40   Stop $46.70   Targets $52.67 / $53.60
Target $52.67
Stop $46.70
Last $48.40
Entry zone

An earnings beat, per the swing desk, and the chart agrees with a retest rather than a chase: CSX closed at $48.40 on Wednesday, still a hair under its 50-day average ($48.67), with the 10-session high at $49.22 as the first gate. The zone is Wednesday's range (low $47.85 to the close); the stop sits under the 10-session low ($46.76); targets are the swing sheet's $52.67 and $53.60. Rails are the quiet corner of this tape: no AI capex, no oil beta, just a beat and a base. Invalidation: close below $46.70

LMT Lockheed Martin
#3 POST-EARNINGS RETEST
Entry $544.66 to $551.51   Stop $537.00   Targets $559.48 / $565.41
Target $559.48
Stop $537.00
Last $551.51
Entry zone

Reported this morning before the open: EPS $7.97 against $7.52 expected, sales $20.7B, a $292B backlog and guidance raised (swing desk, Oct 22). The stock closed Wednesday at $551.51, above its 50-day ($540.35) and still below its 200-day ($565.41), which is the second target; T1 is the 10-session high at $559.48. Defense has carried the Dow twice this week (NOC's upgrade is in Analyst Actions), and an oil shock historically bids the complex rather than hurting it. The entry is the retest of Wednesday's range, not the opening print. Invalidation: close below $537.00

SPOT Spotify
#4 CONDITIONAL: $540 RECLAIM ONLY
Trigger hold above $540   Entry on trigger $540.00 to $552.00   Stop $522.00   Target $675.62
Target $675.62
Stop $522.00
Last $525.34
Entry zone

Reported this morning: subscribers beat at 306M and revenue beat at $5.73B, with an EPS miss (swing desk, Oct 22). The conditional is the swing sheet's own: the setup exists only if the stock holds $540, a level it has not reached yet (Wednesday's close was $525.34, high $531.00, with the 50-day at $522.41 as the stop shelf). No trigger, no trade, and the desk scores it that way: if $540 never holds, this is a no-fill, not a missed win. The target on a triggered entry is the 52-week closing high at $675.62. Invalidation: no entry without the trigger; on a fill, close below $522.00

Today's Signals: The Scanner's Fourth Sheet

From the Wednesday, October 21 close: the scanner qualified 13 signals across its 900-name liquid universe (5 momentum pullbacks, 4 breakouts from range, 1 cup and handle, plus 3 more pullbacks past the cap) and the top 10 print here, ranked by pattern factor times reward-to-risk. No padding: the cap is 10 and the sheet earned 13. Three honest flags. First, the scanner's first cup and handle (CVLT, #9) joins the menu. Second, BRKR prints twice, as the #1 pullback and the #6 breakout on the same close: two detectors agreeing on one name, counted as agreement, not two positions, the same treatment GOOG and GOOGL got on Monday. Third, MEDP (#3) is the ledger's early story: its pullback signals from Oct 16 and Oct 19 both resolved as wins this week, and today it graduates to a breakout. This morning's risk-off open will test every shelf on this page at once.

Method, in the open: pattern factors start as the archive win rates (momentum pullback 55.6% from 1,185 resolved signals; breakout from range 71.7% from 46, the archive's best rate on its smallest sample; cup and handle 56.1% from 41), held as Bayesian priors capped at 120 pseudo-signals. Each signal resolves win, loss or expired against its own printed stop and target within 10 sessions, first touch, stop checked first within a day; expired counts as no win. The ledger's first 4 resolutions landed today (2 wins, 2 losses, all momentum pullbacks, live expectancy +0.318R on the pattern), and the learner moved the pullback factor from 0.556 to 0.554. Small numbers, printed anyway: that is the point of a public ledger.

BMOBXTarget cut $150 to $130, Outperform kept, on realization uncertainty after the September rate spike (Investing.com, Oct 21); Blackstone reports today

A two-way day, unlike Monday's shelf of cuts: real upgrades with real target raises in defense and AI hardware (NOC, RTX, AMD) against downgrades concentrated in consumer and software names (CMG, CRUS, FTNT, NFLX). The Street is rotating its enthusiasm toward the same complexes the tape is.

Watch, Don't Chase

NAMEWHY IT IS ONLY A WATCH
CVX $226.78The swing desk's own watch call: RSI 71.7 at the highs. It is also this page's open Oct 15 setup with T1 at $229, $2.22 away. Both things are true: hold what the ledger holds, add nothing at an overbought high into an oil spike. Earnings Oct 27
V $407.85RSI 76.2 and two straight no-fills on this page (yesterday's re-issued pullback never triggered while the high ran through T1 again). The desk stops re-issuing it and just watches into its Oct 27 earnings
META / TSLAPremarket down (META -2.36% at Finnhub's 8:46 AM print; TSLA -3.5% to -5.3% across snapshots) on prints the market is still digesting. The morning after a mega-cap print is a study session, not an entry, in either direction
LRCX / the chip complexDown 8.4% premarket on a beat with soft guidance (swing desk), with SMH down 3.3% premarket. Semis down 2.9% to 5.3% across the board this morning is a complex to map, not to catch
SMCI $35.57Wednesday's +9.55% on the revenue guide raise, now inside a risk-off open. The guide raise is a reason to watch the first pullback hold, not to chase the gap's second day
BB $9.41Two straight strong days (+8.70%, then +6.09%) with no catalyst verified in this desk's sources. A price fact worth watching; a story this page will not invent
CRWV $61.82Credit eased a notch (CDS about 1,067 bp from 1,085 bp) and the level is still distress pricing. Credit leads this stock, and credit has not voted yes

The Scoreboard

The desk ledger (published Oct 15). CVX closed Wednesday at $226.78 (high $228.48), still open, with T1 at $229 now 1% away and its low ($224.19) never near the stop. AAPL closed at $343.99 (low $338.83, above its $337.50 stop), back above its entry zone for the first time in three sessions: open, and finally working. Closed earlier: MPC, stopped Oct 20 (booked loss), and GILD, expired unfilled (an unfilled target is not a win).

Wednesday's setups (published Oct 21), resolved against Wednesday's bars. MMM (second leg): filled, Wednesday's low of $167.71 dipped into the $167.95 to $171 zone, and the close was $174.74: open, T1 at $176 is $1.26 away. MU: filled, the low of $889.45 sat inside the $858 to $896 zone, high $928.45, close $913.67: open against its $840 stop and $984.37 T1. NOC: no fill, the low ($535.00) never reached the $518 to $528 zone while the stock closed at $539.31; Baird's upgrade this morning (target $675) explains the strength and changes nothing in the scoring: a no-fill, not a win. V: no fill for the second straight day, the low ($404.04) held above the $396 to $403 zone while the high ($409.53) passed T1 ($408.59) again. Recorded as a no-fill again, the GILD rule applied the same way when it costs a good story, and the desk retires the setup here rather than issuing it a third time.

The scanner ledger gets its first resolutions. Four signals resolved, all momentum pullbacks: MEDP from the Oct 16 sheet won in 3 sessions (+1.715R) and MEDP again from the Oct 19 sheet won in 2 sessions (+1.558R); GOOG and GOOGL from the Oct 19 sheet both lost at their stops in 2 sessions (-1.0R each), the duplicate-share-class pair resolving as the pair it always was. The learner folded all 4: live pullback record 2 wins in 4, expectancy +0.318R, factor 0.556 to 0.554. Open: 39 signals (5 remaining from Oct 16, 12 from Oct 19, 9 from Oct 20, 13 new from Oct 21, of which the top 10 are published above; sheets print in full in their runs and the cap applies to this page, not to the ledger). The Saturday Ledger resolves the full week, every week.

Pattern Weather. The menu broadened again: 5 pullbacks, 4 breakouts and the scanner's first cup and handle in the top 10, against 6 pullbacks and 3 breakouts yesterday. Breakouts holding above a third of the menu for a second day, plus 42 names at 52-week highs, is the regime tell the desk has been watching for. Today's open is the stress test: a risk-off gap down will either be absorbed at the shelves (regime change confirmed) or slice through them (earnings artifact, as flagged yesterday). The ledger will say which, in public.

Two old ledgers, printed side by side, never blended. The legacy product page tracked 663 patterns (651 resolved) at a 61.9% win rate and +0.08R expectancy under its per-setup yardstick (audit Oct 2). The complete signal export received since (Oct 17) covers 3,494 signals, of which 1,903 are closed: win rate 52.3%, expectancy +0.106% per signal, profit factor 1.07, average hold 2.9 days, under the archive evaluator's rules. The export is the fuller record and supersedes the page figures for the old system. This page keeps one ledger, in public, from Oct 15 forward.
